That is why I accept Legal Aid Certificates from Legal Aid Alberta - to ensure that no matter what your financial situation is, you have access to experienced legal counsel. I remember being a Junior Criminal Defence Lawyer working on the first youth terrorism charges in Canada. In that case the senior Defence Lawyer had just finished cross-examining a CSIS agent who had directed the R.C.M.P. to infiltrate the Youth Group. After the cross-examination he came back and asked myself and another lawyer working on the case, what he could have done better and what he might have missed. He had over 30 years of serious criminal law experience. He was one of the best Defence Lawyers in the Country.

In Law, as in life, we must always strive to know more (keep informed about changes in the law and new cases that effect your rights) and learn more by doing, researching and getting in the ring to be the best at what we do - because your criminal defence requires it. I've never forgotten that.

Calgary Courts Centre (The Alberta Court of Justice - formerly the Provincial Court of Alberta) includes a dedicated Indigenous Court (Calgary Indigenous Court "CIC") which can assist you with developing a healing plan, connect you to community elders, Elizabeth Fry Society, John Howard Society, Smudging Ceremonies and Healing Circles as part of your journey through the Justice System.
